Coro Vocati presents “Dear People”

Every singer and conductor in Coro Vocati has been influenced by the music, philosophy, pedagogy, and presence of Robert Shaw, a giant among American conductors and disciples of choral music. As longtime music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and founder of the renowned Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus, Shaw remains a prominent figure in the history of our city’s artistic heritage.

“Dear People” features three elements of the creative process of the artist: The Maker, The Making, and The Made. Based on Thomas Aquinas’s statement that “the beauty of the artwork proceeds from the beauty of the artist; when one thing makes and another is made, the making stands between them,” the selected music reflects Shaw’s contributions as a conductor of choral/orchestral masterworks, a champion for social justice, and a composer/arranger of America’s singing heritage of folksongs, folk-hymns, and African-American spirituals.

To quote Shaw himself, “The Arts may indeed be not the luxury of the few but the last best hope of humanity – to inhabit with joy this planet.”
